Buddhist Prayers

1. Prayer for Opening the Sūtra (khai kinh kệ)

The unsurpassed, profound true Dharma
Vô thượng thậm thâm vi diệu Pháp

Is hard to encounter in billions of kalpas.
Bách thiên vạn kiếp nan tao ngộ

This I now have seen and heard, and can accept and uphold,
Ngã kim kiến văn đắc thọ trì

Hoping to understand the true meaning of the Tathāgatas.
Nguyện giải Như Lai chơn thiệt nghĩa

2. Prayer for Transferring Merit (hồi hướng kệ)

Nguyện dĩ thứ công đức

Adorn Buddhas’ Pure Lands,
Trang nghiêm Phật tịnh độ

Requite the fourfold kindness from above,
Thượng báo tứ trọng ân

And relieve the suffering of the three life-journeys below.
Hạ tế tam đồ khổ

Universally wishing sentient beings,
Phổ nguyện chư chúng sinh

Friends, foes, and karmic creditors,
Oan thân chư trái chủ,
All to activate the bodhi mind,
Giai phát bồ đề tâm

And all to be reborn in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Đồng sinh cực lạc quốc

3. The Four Vast Vows (tứ hoằng thệ nguyện)

Sentient beings are countless; I vow to deliver them all.
Chúng sinh vô biên thệ nguyện độ

Afflictions are endless; I vow to eradicate them all.
Phiền não vô biên thệ nguyện đoạn

Dharma Doors are measureless; I vow to learn them all.
Pháp môn vô lượng thệ nguyện học

The Buddha bodhi is unsurpassed; I vow to attain it.
Phật đạo vô thượng thệ nguyện thành.

4. The Universally Worthy Vow of the Ten Great Actions (mười điều nguyện của ngài Phổ Hiền)

First, make obeisance to Buddhas.

Nhứt giả lễ kính chư Phật

Second, praise Tathāgatas.
Nhị giả xưng tán Như Lai

Third, make expansive offerings.
Tam giả quảng tu cúng dướng

Fourth, repent of karma, the cause of hindrances.
Tứ giả sám hối nghiệp chướng

Fifth, express sympathetic joy over others’ merits.
Ngũ giả tùy hỉ công đức

Sixth, request Buddhas to turn the Dharma wheel.
Lục giả thỉnh chuyển pháp luân

Seventh, beseech Buddhas to abide in the world.
Thất giả thỉnh Phật trụ thế

Eighth, always follow Buddhas to learn.
Bát giả thường tùy Phật học

Ninth, forever support sentient beings.
Cửu giả hoằng thuận chúng sinh

Tenth, universally transfer my merit to all.
Thập giả phổ gia hồi hướng.

5. Prayer for the Bodhisattva Way (thường tu tập Bồ Tát Đạo)

May the three hindrances and all afflictions be annihilated.

Nguyện tiêu tam chướng trừ phiền não.

May I gain wisdom and true understanding.
Nguyện đắc trí huệ chơn minh liễu

May all hindrances caused by sin be removed.
phổ nguyện tội chướng tất tiêu trừ

May I always walk the Bodhisattva Way, life after life.
Thế thế thường hành bồ tát đạo.

6. Repentance Prayer (Sám Hối Kệ

The evil karmas I have done with my body, voice, and mind are caused by greed, anger, and delusion, which are without a beginning in time. Before Buddhas I now supplicate for my repentance.

Vãng tích sở tạo chư ác nghiệp, giai do vô thủy tham sân si, tòng thân ngữ ý chi sở sanh, kim đối phật tiền cầu sám hối
The evil karmas I have done with my body, voice, and mind are caused by greed, anger, and delusion, which are without a beginning in time. I repent of all sins, the cause of hindrances.
Vãng tích sở tạo chư ác nghiệp, giai do vô thủy tham sân si, tòng thân ngữ ý chi sở sanh, nhất thiết tội chướng giai sám hối

7. Short Prayer for Rebirth in the Pure Land (Nguyện sanh tây phương tịnh độ)

I wish to be reborn in the Western Pure Land.
Nguyện sinh Tây Phương tịnh độ trung

I wish to have as my parents a lotus flower in nine grades.
Cửu phẩm liên hoa vi phụ mẫu.

When the flower opens, I will see that Buddha and realize that dharmas never arise,
Hoa khai kiến Phật ngộ vô sinh

And I will have as my companions the Bodhisattvas who never regress.
Bất thối Bồ tát vi bạn lữ.

8. Long Prayer for Rebirth in the Pure Land (Tịnh Độ Văn)

I single-mindedly take refuge in Amitābha Buddha in the World of Ultimate Bliss. Illuminate me with Your pure light and draw me in with Your loving, kind vows! Thinking only of You, I now call the name of the Tathāgatha. For the sake of the Bodhi Way, I supplicate to be reborn in Your Pure Land.

Nhất tâm quy mệnh cực nhạc thế giới A Di Đà Phật . Nguyện dĩ tịnh quang chiếu ngã , từ thệ nhiếp ngã . Ngã kim chánh niệm xưng Như Lai danh , vị bồ đề đạo cầu sanh tịnh độ .

Before this Buddha attained Buddhahood in the past, he made a vow: “Suppose there are sentient beings that desire to be reborn in my land and think in earnest only ten thoughts of belief and delight. If they should fail to be reborn there, I would not attain the perfect enlightenment.”
Phật tích bổn thệ : nhược hữu chúng sanh dục sanh ngã quốc , chí tâm tín nhạo nãi chí thập niệm , nhược bất sanh giả bất thủ chánh giác .

Through these causes and conditions for thinking of this Buddha, I have gained entrance into the Tathāgata’s ocean of great vows. By the power of this Buddha’s lovingkindness, my sins will be expunged, and my roots of goodness will grow stronger. At the end of my life, I will know the coming of my time. My body will have no illness or suffering. My heart will have no greed or attachments. My mind will not be demented but will be peaceful as if in meditative concentration. This Buddha, holding a golden lotus-borne platform in His hands, together with a multitude of holy beings, will come to receive me. In the instant of a thought, I will be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss. When the lotus flower opens, I will see this Buddha and hear the Buddha Vehicle, and my Buddha wisdom will suddenly unfold. I will widely deliver sentient beings, fulfilling my bodhi vow.

Dĩ thử niệm phật nhân duyến , đắc nhập Như Lai đại thệ hải trung . Thừa phật từ lực , chúng tội tiêu diệt , thiện căn tăng trưởng . Nhược lâm mệnh chung , tự tri thời chí . Thân vô bệnh khổ , tâm bất tham luyến , ý bất điên đảo , như nhập thiện định . Phật cập thánh chúng thủ chấp kim đài lai nghênh tiếp ngã . Ư nhất niệm khoảnh , sanh cực nhạc quốc . Hoa khai kiến phật , tức văn phật thừa , đốn khai phật tuệ , quảng độ chúng sanh mãn bồ đề nguyện .

Homage to all Buddhas of the past, present, and future, in the ten directions!
Homage to all Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas!
Homage to mahā-prajñā-pāramitā!
Thập phương tam thế nhất thiết Phật ! Nhất thiết Bồ Tát ma ha tát ! Ma ha bát nhã ba la mật !
